[edit] AT Awards ceremony 2023 opening comments
"How lucky we are to be here, amid the turmoil and the strife, the rain and the wind, the uncertainty and the upset, the sheer cost of living to have the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists. CIAT is a store of value, is a bastion of standards, an Oasis of calm and a community of kindred spirits."
"Where the vital flames of this discipline can be ignited, kindled fed and fuelled, admired appreciated and celebrated at an event like the one that we have today. It's a flame that keeps us warm, which provides us with the structures and environments which, whether we realise it or not make life more enjoyable, safer, more sustainable and all the people in this room make that happen. Something we should be celebrating you make it happen with your combination of cutting edge technology common sense and yes on occasion the humble pencil."
These were the opening lines of the host for the evenings event before he introduced the current CIAT President Kevin Crawford. Kevin discussed CIAT achievements over the past two years "the development framework that all of us have been working hard on is now live and online, and the revised QAA subject benchmark was published last year. These underpin the base level of understanding for everyone within our industry. These are how everyone else measures what architectural technology as a discipline is and what it does. It shows us what being chartered means, what AT can do and should be able to do, what it stands for, for its members."
Kevin Crawford went on to discuss the challenges of the past two years such as the recent RAAC scandal and the Building Safety Act.
"What the building safety Act has done, is brought together what we should have been doing for the last 30-40, 50, 60 years. It is actually about having a proper process, having competent people doing the job they are trained to do. Working collaboratively, a core principle of what we are taught, if you do not know the answer, you know someone that does. The Building Safety Act, affects every single person in different ways. It is the biggest change within industry that has happened in my career. Competencies are now going to be measured and we have to stand up to that, CIAT are working with the committees in the background and they will be supporting us moving forward."
"It's a great time to be an AT because of these issues around competency, something CIAT has been working hard on. We have 58 accredited courses and programs within CIAT, 39 are honours degrees, 8 are masters and 11 HNC's and other routes into the profession, plus there is the graduate scheme. These are paving the way for the next generation to follow on what has been built over a number of years. So I see ATs in a very healthy position and I applaud every single educator here who have nothing but the future profession in their hearts."
